The Ontario Summer Games are coming to St. Marys!

The Stonetown has been selected to host the triathlon events for the 2024 Games. On August 2 and 3, 60 young athletes will swim in the quarry, cycle our streets, and run through the grounds of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Games are being hosted by the City of London and presented by London Hydro. Over 3,500 athletes will participate in 18 sports, with events happening from August 1 to 4. Visit the Ontario Summer Games website to learn more.

Impacts to residents

Reduced quarry hours

The St. Marys Quarry will open late (1:00 pm) on August 2 and 3 to accommodate the swimming portion of the triathlon.

Road closures

The following roads will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon) on August 2 and 3 to keep the cycling route clear:

  • Queen St. E from Charles St. S to Thomas St.
  • Water St. S from Queen St. E to the entrance of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame

A detour route will be in place to allow motorists to travel through town (see map below). Vehicles will be able to cross the closed roads at Church St., Wellington St. and Park St. under police supervision when no athletes are on the course. Police, Town staff, and volunteers will be onsite to help direct traffic.

Limited driveway access
Residents on Queen St. E and Water St. S will have limited driveway access during the road closures. There will be some opportunities for vehicles to exit driveways between triathlon heats, but motorists will not be able to re-enter their driveways until the road has re-opened.

Impacted residents are encouraged to park on nearby side streets or in the Elgin St. municipal lot during the event.

Residents with mobility issues who require access to their driveway can contact our Public Works Coordinator at 519-284-2340, ext. 213 or tredman@town.stmarys.on.ca to make special arrangements.

Downtown parking
Parking will be unavailable in the closure areas on Queen St. E and Water St. S from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on August 2 and 3.

Parking will be available on all side streets and in downtown municipal lots during the event. Downtown lots can be found on Water St. N, Jones St. E and Elgin St. E.

Opportunities to get involved

Volunteering
Volunteers are needed to support various aspects of the Ontario Summer Games. Visit the Games website to learn more about volunteer opportunities and apply online.

Frequently asked questions

Why was St. Marys selected to host the triathlon?
Organizers approached the Town after scouting the quarry as a location for the swimming portion of the triathlon.

Staff considered the request, and found several potential benefits to hosting the event:

  • It could make more people aware of St. Marys and the quarry
  • It could increase tourism, bringing more money to local businesses
  • It promotes an active lifestyle and could inspire more people to play sports
  • It could bring the community together in a positive way
  • It gives us a chance to show our community pride

With these opportunities in mind, staff made the decision to move forward with the event.

How was the route chosen?
The route was developed around the quarry since the swimming portion of the triathlon comes first.

The cycling route came next. There are specific requirements for the cycling route because of the racing bicycles used by the athletes. The surface of the route must:

  • Be made of high-quality asphalt with no topcoat treatments
  • Have no railway crossings
  • Have no restrictions with respect to grade elevation changes
  • Have no parked cars

The route had to be planned along arterial roads to meet these standards, which is why Queen St. and Water St. were chosen.

The route will finish on the road behind the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

Will residents be able to watch the events?
Yes! Residents with properties on Queen St. E and Water St. S will have front row seats to the action. We encourage people to gather in the downtown core to cheer athletes on as they cycle past. Stay tuned for information about dedicated spectator zones.
Will downtown shops and services be open?

Yes! Businesses will be able to operate as usual. We encourage you to check with individual businesses about any special hours closer to the event.

Will my garbage and recycling be collected?
Yes! Residents on Water St. S and Queen St. E expecting garbage collection on Friday, August 2, are asked to have bins out to the curb before 7:00 a.m. as Bluewater Recycling Agency (BRA) will be by to collect them before the road closure. Recycling will be picked up after 12:00 p.m. (noon).
