Traffic sign changes

Yield signs are currently being swapped for stop signs in several locations throughout St. Marys’ east ward.

The decision to change the signs was part of an amendment to the Town’s Traffic, Parking and Boulevard Maintenance By-law, which Council approved in 2021.

Stop signs are being added to:

  • Accommodate the installation of sidewalks and improve pedestrian linkages
  • Improve overall safety, especially in areas that have seen an increase in daily traffic levels, or where safety concerns have been observed

The changes from yield signs to stop signs will be made in three phases. Phase I is now complete; Phase II will begin on September 9, 2022.

Phase I (Complete)
 Waterloo St. S & Elgin St. E
  • Conversion to four-way stop - northbound and southbound stop signs to be installed on Waterloo St. S.

Charles St. S & Jones St. E

  • Replace yield signs with stop signs - northbound and southbound on Charles St. S

Charles St. S & Elgin St E

  • Replace yield signs with stop signs – northbound and southbound on Charles St. S
Phase II (Starting September 9, 2022)

Brock St. S & Jones St. E

  • Replace yield sign with stop sign – southbound on Brock St. S

Brock St. S & Elizabeth St.

  • Replace yield sign with stop sign – southbound on Brock St. S

Brock St. S & Rogers Ave.

  • Replace yield sign with stop sign – southbound on Brock St. S
Phase III

Stoneridge Blvd. & Ridgewood Cres.

  • Replace yield sign with stop sign – westbound at both exits

Peel St. S & Elgin St. E

  • Replace yield signs with stop signs – northbound and southbound on Peel St. S

A number of steps will be taken to alert motorists to the change:

  • A highly visible warning sign will be added to the new stop signs for 30 days
  • Stop bars will be painted on the pavement
  • Police will be active following installation to ensure drivers are abiding by the new signage

The sign replacement process is expected to take approximately 90 days, meaning that all signs should be in place around the end of October. The Town intends to replace yield signs with stop signs in other locations throughout St. Marys sometime in the future.

Questions about the new signs can be directed to Jeff Wolfe, Infrastructure Services Manager at jwolfe@town.stmarys.on.ca or 519-284-2340, ext. 397
