The Town of St. Marys and a group of dedicated volunteers are raising funds to repair and expand the St. Marys Skate Park, now known as the Rotary All Wheels Park on James Street.

The St. Marys Rotary Club has generously sponsored $100,000 towards the project; however, more help is needed to meet the fundraising goal of $400,000.

Recognition of corporate donors and all donations over $1,000 will be incorporated into the final design and layout of the Rotary All Wheels Park!

The story behind the project

"The development of this All Wheels Park is a wonderful tale of community, both young and old, coming together to create a new and dynamic space."
- Jean Alice Rowcliffe

The current St. Marys Skatepark was built in 2013. Certain features are beginning to degrade due to the passage of time and heavy use. Repairs are necessary to keep the park inclusive and safe for all skill levels and wheels.

In 2021, highschool students Quin and Sully Bolton approached their neighbour Jean Alice Rowcliffe for her help to repair and expand the skatepark. Rowcliffe agreed to work with the brothers. She felt the partnership was "meant to be" and that renovating the skatepark was the right project to honor her late son James, who passed away from a rare form of cancer in 2009. Not only was James a talented skateboarder, but also, the skatepark was located on James Street South!

Rowcliffe and the Bolton brothers presented their proposal to repair and expand the skatepark to Council on October 26, 2021. Council agreed to "support the project in principal".  A Skatepark Steering Committee was formed and efforts began to get public feedback, secure a contractor and raise the necessary funds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why repair and expand the park?

There is a demand for the St. Marys Skatepark to accommodate more people, skill levels and equipment (i.e. scooters, rollerblades and bicycles in addition to skateboards). Skateboarding parks have become more popular since skateboarding became an Olympic sport in 2020. The number of skaters has also grown with the advent of scooters, which introduce young children to being on wheels. At this time many St. Marys families travel outside of town to find larger and more modern parks.

What are you considering adding to the current skatepark?

The current St. Marys Skatepark contains mostly street element (stairs, rails, ramps and ledges) with one quarter pipe transition element.

In February of 2023, St. Marys Town Council approved a design concept for the upgraded park, which includes:

  • Street elements
  • A quarter pipe
  • A bowl
  • A pump track

This design separates features that are considered beginner (pump track) from those that are considered advanced (bowl).

The design was chosen after two rounds of consultation with the public, which included online surveys and visits to local elementary and high schools.

What company will be working on the skatepark? How were they chosen?
Radius Contracting Inc. will be working on the repair and expansion of the St. Marys Skatepark. They were the successful proponent of a design and construct Request for Proposal.
Will the public be consulted during the project?

The public has been consulted multiple times throughout this project:

  • January/February 2022 - Online survey and virtual classroom visits about usage, skill level and preferred features and services
  • January 2023 - Second online survey and additional classroom visits to review and gather input on the proposed design concepts for the park
