Town wants to hear how local small businesses are “going green”

The Town of St. Marys is asking local small businesses to share their strategies for reducing waste as part of a new recognition program.

The Green Initiatives Awareness Program was developed by the Town’s Green Committee to highlight the community’s efforts to combat climate change. Twice each year, the Town will request submissions from a specific group, based on a specific theme. That group will be asked to share details about an initiative they have undertaken to promote sustainability. The Town will review the initiatives, choose the ones that best fit the criteria, and then share the details through its communications channels.

The inaugural theme is waste reduction, and the Town is seeking submissions from businesses with 2 to 15 employees. Submissions can be made through a convenient online form, available at www.townofstmarys.com/gogreen. Paper copies are also available upon request.

“We know that many of our local small businesses are making an effort to reduce waste,” said Green Committee Council representative, Fern Pridham. “Even small changes – like switching to paper straws or using compostable materials – play a big role in creating a more climate-conscious community."

Submissions will be accepted until March 18, 2022. The selected initiatives will be promoted through the Town website, social media accounts and in the local paper in celebration on Earth Day of April 22, 2022.

“By promoting the actions of our small businesses through our networks, we hope to inspire others to join the fight to protect our planet,” said Pridham.
