The Town of St. Marys is collaborating with consultants to develop a Cemetery Master Plan to guide the future of the St. Marys Cemetery over the next 25 years. This initiative will ensure the cemetery continues to meet the evolving needs of the community while preserving its historical significance and enhancing operational sustainability.
Project goals
The Cemetery Master Plan will:
- Assess the current state and capacity of the cemetery.
- Recommend strategies for space optimization and long-term sustainability to develop a 25-year plan.
- Review and update cemetery bylaws and administrative practices.
- Explore modern interment options, including green burials and cremation services.
- Evaluate software solutions for improved record keeping and public access.
Historical information
Established in 1885, the St. Marys Cemetery replaced the original Elgin St. cemetery. It spans 23 acres and includes notable burials such as:
- Arthur Meighen, Canada’s ninth Prime Minister.
- James Brine, one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
- George Graham, a Titanic passenger.
The cemetery features unique elements like hillside mausoleums and a Catholic section divided into saint-named blocks.
