Project will enhance station’s operation, accessibility and visual appeal

The St. Marys VIA Rail station is getting a minor makeover. Work will begin this week to move the ticket counter to the vestibule in the northeast corner of the station’s lobby. The project is expected to take a month and will not cause any disruption to service in the station.

Selling train tickets from the vestibule is not a new idea. Until the early 1960s, railway personnel served customers from a smaller office in the same area. This location offers the ideal vantage point, allowing the attendants to view the tracks, platform and station without having to leave their post.

When the project is complete, attendants will serve customers through an accessible ticket window in the vestibule. The current counter will be removed to provide more exhibit space in the station, which doubles as an art gallery.

“This project is an opportunity to enhance the operation and visual appeal of the St. Marys VIA Station,” said Economic Development Manager, Kelly Deeks-Johnson. “It will also make the space more welcoming and accessible for patrons and travelers.”

The St. Marys Station Gallery will continue to operate during the project. The gallery is currently running an exhibit by Anna Koot called “Painting Nature in Hot Wax.” Information about current and past Station Gallery exhibits can be found at www.stmarysstationgallery.com.

The VIA station counter construction project was approved by St. Marys Town Council, as well as the Town’s Heritage and Accessibility Advisory Committees. The tender for the work was awarded to St. Marys-based JSB Construction.
