Municipality hiring staff to ensure COVID-19 safety protocols are met

The Town of St. Marys has announced its decision to re-open the Pyramid Recreation Centre’s second ice pad on Thursday, October 29, 2020. The move comes just weeks after the first pad was safely and successfully re-opened, following a six-month closure due to COVID-19.

A number of protocols remain in place to ensure the PRC meets all local and provincial pandemic guidelines. Only those registered in a program/league and one caregiver/spectator per child are allowed into the building. Anyone not registered in a program/league that would like to visit the PRC should make an appointment in advance by calling 519-284-2160.

Patrons will use Entrance B to access the Rock Rink and Entrance D to access the Blue Rink. There will be plenty of signage on site to help with navigation. Masks must be worn by everyone using the common areas of the facility, but do not have to be worn on the ice. Players are encouraged to come fully dressed; there will be space in the change rooms and a staging area for tying skates. Showers will not be available.

Most prime time ice on both pads has been allocated to minor sports leagues, but there may be some ice available for other users. Those interested in booking any remaining ice time are encouraged to contact the PRC at 519-284-2160. There will no shoulder or ticket ice available at this time.

To help manage the increasing flow of traffic at the PRC, the Town is currently hiring part-time Screeners/Greeters to work at the facility. These employees will conduct COVID-19 screening, educate patrons on COVID-19 protocols and help sanitize high-touch areas. A job description and application instructions are available at www.townofstmarys.com/careers.

The additional costs to operate the second ice pad are being covered by the Safe Restart funding that the Town received from the provincial and federal governments in August. The municipality was given $396,700 in emergency funding to help offset COVID-19 costs and revenue losses.

For more information about the re-opening of the ice pad, contact Stephanie Ische, Director of Community Services at 519-284-2340, ext. 624.
