The Town of St. Marys has officially proclaimed Tuesday, November 28, 2017 GivingTuesday. The proclamation was made as a show of support for this global movement, which encourages individuals, businesses and organizations to give back during the holiday season.

It was St. Marys Business Improvement Area (BIA) member and Kitchen Smidgen owner Cindy Taylor who requested the Town officially recognize GivingTuesday. Taylor will be selling mustache-shaped cookies in support of Movember as her contribution to the cause. A number of other BIA members and businesses in St. Marys have also committed to the initiative. Visit Downtown St. Marys on Facebook and the GivingTuesday St. Marys page (www.givingtuesday.ca/partners/givingtuesdaystmarys) to see how local businesses and organization are participating.

Town of St. Marys staff are also being encouraged to be charitable on GivingTuesday. On November 28, employees can pay $2 to wear their favourite sports jersey to work. The proceeds will support the Town’s annual United Way campaign, which raised close to $2,000 in 2016. The 2017 campaign started in October and has featured several other fundraising events, including a Halloween costume contest, a corporate-wide beard growing competition and a chili cook-off.

Those who are interested in joining the movement can visit the GivingTuesday St. Marys page at www.givingtuesday.ca/partners/givingtuesdaystmarys. For more details about GivingTuesday, visit www.givingtuesday.ca.
