Leaf and yard waste to be collected every other Monday starting May 15

The Town of St. Marys is making changes to curbside leaf and yard waste collection. Under the new program, leaf and yard waste will be picked up every other Monday from mid-May to mid-November. Collection dates will also fall on recycling weeks to make it easier for residents to remember the schedule.

The changes aim to improve service levels by enhancing the frequency and convenience of leaf and yard waste collection. Residents will now receive curbside leaf and yard waste collection 14 times throughout the year, up from 11 times in 2016. The decision to move collection to Mondays was also made with convenience in mind.

“Many of our residents use their weekends to catch up on yard work,” said Jed Kelly, Director of Public Works. “By moving collection to Mondays, we hope to make it quicker and easier for residents to get rid of their leaf and yard waste.”

Residents in the north and west areas of town will be the first to experience the enhanced service on Monday, May 15. Collection will start in the southeast and southwest of St. Marys the following Monday, May 22. The program will continue on a bi-weekly basis throughout the spring, summer and fall, with the final pick up date scheduled for Monday, November 20.

Along with the new program also comes a new provider; Barry’s Handyman Services has been contracted by the Town to collect leaf and yard waste in 2017. Curbside garbage and recycling will continue to be collected by Bluewater Recycling Association (BRA) on behalf of the Town.

In addition to this enhanced service, the Town will also accept leaf and yard waste at the St. Marys Landfill (1221 Water Street South) and the Municipal Operations Centre (408 James Street South) year round, free of charge.

A list of leaf and yard waste collection dates can be found at www.townofstmarys.com/leafandyardwaste. A hard copy calendar is also in production and will be available before the end of April at Town facilities and four local retailers: Sam’s Home Hardware, McDonald’s Independent Grocer, Stonetown Foodland and the Canadian Tire Store. Residents can also request that a copy be mailed to their home by calling 519-284-2340 ext. 213 or kclifford@town.stmarys.on.ca.
