Capsule to be buried at ceremony on December 9

A signed sesquicentennial flag; an award-winning butter tart recipe; a hand written letter from the mayor. These are just some of the items that will go down in St. Marys history as part of a Canada 150 time capsule project.

The project began back in October, when residents were asked to make suggestions for items to be included in the capsule. Last week, a committee of citizens, Council and Town staff judged the submissions based on size, preservability and significance to St. Marys.

The final list of items was announced on Wednesday, November 23, 2017. Over 30 objects were selected, including pictures of local buildings, posters and programs from events and many other artifacts that reflect the culture of the community. Other items, like a receipt from a tank of gas, real estate listings and grocery store flyers will also be included to give future generations a glimpse of what life was like in 2017.

The capsule will be buried beneath the Wellington Street Bridge as part of an official re-opening ceremony for the structure. The bridge has been under construction since June and is set to re-open to traffic on Friday, December 1, 2017. The ceremony and time capsule burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2017. A plaque will be placed at the burial site with instructions for future residents to open the time capsule in 2067.
