Town aiming to improve safety of Church St. S and Jones St. E intersection

Changes are underway at the intersection of Church St. S and Jones St. E in St. Marys.

Starting this week, the Town will be taking several measures to improve safety at the corner, which has been the site of several collisions in recent years.

Council directed staff to review the intersection after hearing concerns from several residents. The review found that most accidents happen when an eastbound driver enters the intersection incorrectly. Drivers often enter the intersection incorrectly because their view is obstructed; they may also be less cautious because of the yield sign on Jones St E.

The resulting changes will include the replacement of the yield sign with a stop sign, the trimming and/or removal of trees and vegetation in the area, and the removal of street parking spaces on Church St. S. “Hidden Intersection” signs will also be added to Church St.

Work in the area will be done throughout the week of October 23 to 27, 2023. There will be intermitted road closures while trees are removed and road lines are painted. Any trees taken down in the process will be replaced by three new trees elsewhere in town, as per the Town’s Forestry Management Policy.

Lost parking spaces will be offset by the number of new spaces that were added during the reconstruction of Wellington St. No accessible parking spaces will be removed through this process.
