In a heartfelt celebration of community spirit and selfless dedication, St. Marys continues to recognize those who make a difference through their unwavering commitment and generosity.

At its meeting last night, Town Council recognized three residents for their selfless deeds as part of its “Strong as Stone” program. The program allows people to nominate those whose volunteer acts benefit the community.

Marie Stevens is among the group and has actively volunteered with the St. Marys Community Players, the St. Marys Presbyterian Church, and the Inner Wheel Club of St. Marys. Since 2019, she has served as the treasurer and contributed to various community initiatives. Marie has been a consistent supporter of local charitable efforts, including the Salvation Army Kettle Program and the Heart and Stroke Society through annual canvassing.

Stephannie Metcalfe, known as “Sparkle,” founded the 1st St. Marys Sparks/Embers unit, which has grown from a small group to 31 members aged 5–9 over eight years. Stephanie empowers young girls by fostering personal growth, community service, and teaching life skills such as first aid and financial literacy through cookie sales.

The final recipient was Alizon Sharun, a poet and resident of St. Marys, who serves as the director and chair of the St. Marys Poetry Circle. Ms. Sharun has organized community poetry events and chaired monthly meetings, promoting both local and international poetry. Her dedication extends beyond poetry, as she actively supports various community events and local poets in St. Marys.

"The Strong as Stone program is a testament to the incredible spirit of our community and the selflessness of those who continually uplift and inspire others,” says Mayor, Al Strathdee. "Recognizing these individuals is important for all of us on Town Council."

The next call for Strong as Stone nominations will start in spring 2026. An announcement will be made when nominations open through the local media, social media, and the Town website (www.townofstmarys.com).
