An aquatic way to “Try like Terry” on Sunday, Sept. 19

The Town of St. Marys is pleased to announce that the five kayaks in the popular ‘Yak Shack loan program through the St. Marys Public Library will be available on Sunday, Sept. 19 for those wishing to participate in the Terry Fox “Your day, your way” fundraiser.

St. Marys has supported Terry Fox since the inspiring young man ran through St. Marys in July 1980 as part of his Marathon of Hope to end cancer by raising funds for research.

Volunteers have long organized a Terry Fox Run in St. Marys, and in 2020 a paddling portion was added, which brought kayakers, canoeists and stand-up paddleboarders onto the Thames River to help raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation.

There will be one kayak loan period, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to coincide with the river event, which begins at 11:30 a.m. Kayaks must be reserved in advance by contacting the St. Marys Public Library by calling 519-284-3346 or by visiting the library in person. Gear will be available and waivers may be signed at the ‘Yak Shack at Milt Dunnell Field when kayaks are picked up.

Donations to the St. Marys Terry Fox effort are suggested in exchange for the loan and can be made online or by cash or cheque on Sunday, Sept. 19 when picking up gear and kayak.

St. Marys Town Council has declared September 13 to 19 as Terry Fox Week in St. Marys. For more information on Fox’s Marathon of Hope, visit www.terryfox.org.
