Ontario Seniors’ Games triathlon is June 7; Senior Services barbecue is June 15

June 2018 marks the 34th annual Seniors’ Month in Ontario. This year’s theme is “Now's the time to start something new”. The theme is meant to challenge stereotypes about aging and emphasize how seniors can continue to live vibrant, active lives into their golden years.

In that spirit, the Ontario Seniors’ Games - which began in St. Marys in late May - will continue into June. In addition to other activities, a triathlon will take place on Thursday, June 7. Participants will begin with a predicted time walk from Milt Dunnell Field around 10:00 a.m., complete a bike ride and then finish their day with a swim at the Pyramid Recreation Centre. The games are open to individuals aged 50 and older. All events are based on how close participants are to their predicted times.

The St. Marys Friendship Centre will also mark Seniors’ Month with a barbecue on June 15. The event will be located in the Rotary Leisure Park beside the Pyramid Recreation Centre splash pad (the Friendship Centre is the rain location). Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served at 12 noon. Attendees are invited to try a variety of backyard games such as ladder ball and a bean bag toss. The cost to attend is $10 per person, with proceeds benefitting local and area seniors programs.
Pre-registration by June 8 is required.

“We hope residents will take the opportunity to come for lunch and support programs for seniors in our community,” says Senior Services Program Coordinator Hillary Bennett. “We’re going with this year’s idea of ‘trying something new’. Along with a Hawaiian theme, there will be fun backyard games to play as well as an exercise component to try. It’s going to be a great day!”
