Four new volunteer firefighters have officially joined the ranks of the St. Marys Fire Department. Sarah Black, Ian Edwards, Ryan Hartsell and Matt Smale were added to the team earlier this summer.

Three of the firefighters were hired to fill vacancies left by retirements; the fourth is a new position that was added with the support of Town Council.

“Having the right number of qualified firefighters is essential to the protection of St. Marys and Perth South,” said Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson. “These new recruits are a welcome addition and will help ensure the safety of the communities we serve.”

The hiring marks a historic moment for the Fire Department. In its more than 150-year existence, the department has never had a female firefighter. The hiring of Sarah Black this summer is an exciting step forward, said Anderson.

“We put a lot of time and effort into selecting the right candidates for our department,” he said. “We are confident that every one of these individuals represents our core values of authenticity, courage, trust, dedication and excellence.”

“My wish for everyone in the department is nothing less than a successful, healthy and fulfilling career. I welcome our new recruits and congratulate them on joining our team."
