The St. Marys Fire Department recently received delivery of its new HP 75 E-One Aerial ladder truck. It is designated as Aerial 2 and replaces a truck that had been in service for 29 years, nine years beyond recognized frontline service standards.

Aerial 2 was purchased through 1200 Degrees Darch Fire, built by E-One Fire Trucks and features a 75 foot (23-metre) aerial ladder, 25 feet (eight metres) taller than the previous ladder. From the time of order, delivery took approximately six months following a lengthy process involving research, specifications, request for proposals and evaluation. The project budget was $884,897.28.

“As St. Marys and the surrounding area continues to grow, so does the need to renew and update the infrastructure that is our fire rescue apparatus fleet,” Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson says. “Aerial 2 provides our community as well as our firefighters with an up-to-date, safe and versatile piece of fire rescue equipment that is a key component of our ability to provide appropriate levels of service to our community. Residents are welcome to stop by the St. Marys Fire Hall during regular hours to view this new addition to our fleet.”

The new truck is equipped with better braking ability, a safer crew compartment, a larger fire pump and increased pumping capacity along with a multi-position waterway. The versatile aerial ladder apparatus offers a variety of services, including the rescue of persons on upper floors, access to roofs and upper floors for firefighting operations, overhead water application to upper areas and mobile standpipe water supply operations. All members of the department will familiarize themselves with the apparatus –  including driving, pumping, and operation of the aerial ladder – and will also have on-going training simulating use in emergency conditions.

The St. Marys Fire Department provides a wide range of emergency and non-emergency fire rescue and public services to the St. Marys Fire Protection Area, which covers the Town and contract areas within Perth South.
