Easter came early this year to the St. Marys Fire Department, when an anonymous person generously donated $12,000 toward the purchase of new firefighting nozzles and helmets.

The person donated the money just prior to the Easter long weekend. According the Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson, the gift could mean the difference between life and death.

“These two items will help keep our firefighters safe, and let us perform our duties more efficiently and effectively,” says Anderson. “The nozzles could help save somebody’s life. We can’t say enough how much we appreciate this generous donation.”

The new 38 mm nozzles will replace the current aging nozzles that have been well used. The new Task Force Tips (TFT) Working Fire nozzle delivers revolutionary performance when maximum flows are needed for a “working fire”. The nozzle’s exclusive pressure relief system dramatically limits nozzle reaction helping to keep firefighters safe.

The Fire Department currently has helmets that are nearing the end of their life cycle. The firefighting helmet is one of the most important aspects of the firefighter protective ensemble. It protects the area that generates critical thinking and physiological actions by protecting the firefighter's head from fire and falling objects.

“Given the hazards we face every time we hear the alarm and roll out, donations such as these allow us to meet the health and safety needs of firefighters, while providing the protection our citizens expect and deserve,” Deputy Fire Chief Brent Dundas said.

Other individuals or organizations that would like to donate to the Fire Department can send their contribution to: St. Marys Fire Department, PO Box 998, 172 James Street South, St. Marys, ON N4X 1B6 or contact Fire Chief Anderson at 519-284-2340 ext. 201.
