St. Marys Fire Department is pleased to share that 8-year-old Kathryn Holliday, a grade three student of Little Falls Public School was this year’s “Fire Chief for a Day”.

With Fire Prevention Week October 9-15, 2022, came the opportunity for elementary students to enter to win a “Fire Chief for a Day Experience”. The 2022 Fire Prevention Week theme was: "Fire Doesn’t Wait, Plan Your Escape”. The task was to have students plan and draw their own home escape plan.

Kathryn’s escape plan illustrated her knowledge and understanding of key fire safety messages such as creating and practicing a family escape plan. Kathryn was selected from 95 submissions.

For Kathryn’s efforts in winning the contest, she received a tour of the new fire hall, tried on bunker gear, sprayed water from a fire hose, conducted fire extinguisher training, took a ride in a ladder fire truck, visited Town Hall and met with Mayor Al Strathdee.

Kathryn was presented with a “Fire Chief for a Day” certificate, a white Fire Chief helmet and a swag bag full of fire prevention and education items.

Following their busy morning, Kathryn was driven back to Little Falls Public School in the ladder truck, where her classmates awaited and greeted her arrival.

The St. Marys Fire Department wants to thank everyone who participated in this contest and all other Fire Prevention Week events and activities.
