Free concerts, classes and picnic in the coming weeks

There’s no shortage of fun on the Grand Trunk Trail and trestle over the coming weeks, as the 20 on the Trestle celebrations ramp up.

On Monday, July 22 at 7 p.m. the St. Marys Lions Club are sponsoring a Bubbleology Show. Miss T will create amazing bubble creations that will delight all ages. Watch from the trestle or from your watercraft on the river as they drift over the edge!

Prior to this imaginative show, the trestle will play host to a few popular activities: on Thursday, July 18 the St. Marys Public Library’s Tales for Tots program will move to the trestle, weather permitting. Bring your strollers and blankets for this special 10 a.m. edition. Later the same day, the popular Sunset Yoga class, sponsored by the St. Marys Healthcare Foundation, takes place at 7:15 p.m.

On Saturday, July 20 at 11 a.m., take in a free Taoist Tai Chi demonstration class, courtesy of the Stratford Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism. The movements, led by a credited instructor, contribute to better balance and posture, increased strength and flexibility, improved circulation, calmness and peace of mind.

Move into August with a Sunset Yoga class on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 7:15 p.m., then cap off your long weekend with a Holiday Monday Picnic from 5 to 8 p.m. Bring your picnic basket and blanket for a meal high above St. Marys, with a DJ spinning ‘90s hits in honour of the years the trail and trestle were constructed. This fun evening is courtesy of Kitchen Smidgen and the Flower Shop and More.

Later that week on Thursday, Aug. 8, Thorn and Roses will have a free concert on the trestle, beginning at 6:30 p.m., sponsored by the Army, Navy Air Force Veterans Club. Enjoy three-part harmonies and unique arrangements of country, classic rock and pop hits. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets for this one-hour show.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Aug. 10 for the literal highlight of 20 on the Trestle. That day, from 8 to 11 p.m., the trail and trestle will be spectacularly lit in a special installation for all to enjoy thanks to Thames Crest Farms and its partner builders: Bickell Built Homes, Larry Otten Contracting, Heritage Homes and Teahen Homes. Look for more information on this special night coming soon but mark your calendars now for this one-night-only occasion!

Astronomy buffs who attended the July 10 event will be pleased to know that the Stratford Astronomy Group hopes to reschedule another viewing night in August, which will be shared once it is finalized. Keep your fingers crossed for clear skies!

Events are weather dependent: in event of threatening skies for any of these events, please check the Town’s Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages for day-of cancellation or rescheduling information.

The 20 on the Trestle celebration continues into October! See the full list of events at www.townofstmarys.com/20onthetrestle or on the mural in the Andrews Buildings windows at 135 Queen St. E.
