On Wednesday, September 18, representatives from TD Bank, Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) and the Town of St. Marys commemorated the installation of a new information plaque outside the St. Marys Quarry, otherwise known as “Canada’s largest outdoor freshwater swimming pool”.
Funded through the TD Friends of the Environment grant and written by the UTRCA, the plaque includes details about fish that can be found in the famous swimming hole: the Common Carp, Pumpkinseed and Rock Bass. It also answers common questions about the Quarry’s depth (up to 10 metres), temperature and groundwater origins.
This “fish plaque” as well as its neighboring historical plaque can be accessed year-round outside the Quarry gates at 425 Water Street South, St. Marys. More information about the Quarry is also available at www.townofstmarys.com/quarry.

The Aquatics Centre has been closed to the public since November 2024, to accommodate renovations to the space that would address safety concerns caused by saltwater and high humidity. These renovations were deemed essential to ensure the facility could be used safely and effectively by the community. Due to unexpected recently discovered structural issues caused by saltwater and high humidity stemming from insufficiently sized HVAC equipment installed during the original construction, the renovation work is now expected to extend the closure until fall 2025.
The Town is hosting a drop-in Open House in the EndZone of the Pyramid Recreation Centre on Wednesday, June 18 from 5 to 7 PM. Residents will have the chance to observe the progress of the renovation to date and ask questions.
