Celebrate the iconic Grand Trunk Trail with a season’s worth of events!

Begin your long weekend – and the start of a season of celebration – on St. Marys’ iconic Grand Trunk Trail and trestle!

On Saturday, May 18, St. Marys Town Council will hold a special meeting on the trestle to officially open the 20 on the Trestle celebration, followed by birthday cupcakes!

The festivities begin at 10:30 a.m., with a parade originating at the Wellington Street North trail access. In a nod to the Trail’s 1999 grand opening ceremony, children and pets are invited to attend, and to dress for the occasion in festive costume!

“I’m excited for this celebration,” says Mayor Al Strathdee of 20 on the Trestle. “Personally, I spent most of one summer helping build the trestle as a volunteer back in the day, and it’s great to see how much people have come to love this integral part of our town.”

Mayor Strathdee also hopes the lofty location will bring government down to earth. “Not everyone, especially children, can attend Town Council meetings. This will be a fun, ceremonial meeting, but it is an opportunity to see our local government in action.”

This event is rain or shine; please dress for the conditions. The St. Marys Farmers Market also begins its season on Saturday, May 18; everyone is encouraged to have a “made in St. Marys” morning!

The special meeting is only the first in a series of free and fundraising events taking place along the trail until Saturday, October 5.

In June, 20 on the Trestle events include an introduction to hiking by the Avon Trail Club on Sunday, June 2 and a photography show by the St. Marys Clicks camera club on Thursday, June 6. On Wednesday, June 19, the St. Marys Volunteer Firefighters will have a special training night on the Thames River – and there will be no better vantage point to watch than from the trestle.
