Town of St. Marys to Undertake Phragmites Control in Stormwater Management Ponds
The Town of St. Marys, in partnership with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA), will be undertaking treatment of invasive Phragmites in several stormwater management ponds during the week of October 19 to 23, 2026. The exact timing of the work will depend on weather conditions.
Phragmites, also known as common reed, is an aggressive invasive plant that spreads rapidly and outcompetes native vegetation. Dense stands of Phragmites can negatively impact local ecosystems, reduce biodiversity and interfere with the intended function of stormwater management infrastructure.
The treatment program is intended to reduce the spread of this invasive species and help ensure stormwater management ponds continue to operate as designed for flood mitigation and water management.
"Managing invasive species is an important part of maintaining healthy natural areas and protecting critical municipal infrastructure," said Jed Kelly, Director of Public Works. "By addressing Phragmites growth now, we can help preserve biodiversity while ensuring our stormwater management systems remain effective."
Residents may notice UTRCA crews working around stormwater management ponds throughout the week. Signage will be posted in affected areas where required.
Support for this initiative is provided by the UTRCA, the Invasive Phragmites Control Fund (IPCF) and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
