Town highlights transportation options available to St. Marys residents
Following Council’s recent decision to withdraw from the PC Connect program, the Town of St. Marys recognizes that residents may have questions and concerns about how they will travel to appointments, work, shopping and other out of town destinations.
While the end of PC Connect service will mean one less transportation option for residents, several local and intercity services continue to connect St. Marys with destinations both within and outside the community.
Rideshare and taxi services
Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are increasingly available in St. Marys, offering residents a flexible option for both local and out-of-town trips.
Recent sample fares showed trips within St. Marys available for approximately $5 to $8, while a trip from downtown St. Marys to Stratford General Hospital was approximately $19 to $22. Rideshare services offer a flexible, on-demand transportation option, with fares varying based on time and demand. For those traveling with friends or family, sharing a ride can also help make trips more affordable.
Stonetown Taxi and Delivery Services also provides transportation daily from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm within and outside St. Marys, with a flat rate of $12 for trips within town and $45 for trips between St. Marys and Stratford.
FlixBus
FlixBus provides another intercity transportation option and is expanding its St. Marys service beginning December 7. Service in St. Marys is provided on demand, meaning the bus will only stop in the community when a passenger has booked a trip. Passengers should book their trip at least two hours before the scheduled departure time.
Currently, a morning bus departs St. Marys at 7:55 a.m. and arrives at Stratford’s Cooper Terminal at 8:15 a.m. Return trips depart Stratford at 10:55 a.m. and 4:55 p.m., arriving in St. Marys at 11:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.
Beginning December 7, a second daily departure will be added in each direction, with service operating seven days a week. The expanded schedule will include:
- Eastbound, toward Stratford, Kitchener, Guelph, Toronto Pearson International Airport and Toronto: departures at 7:55 a.m. and 2:55 p.m.
- Westbound, toward London: departures at 11:20 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.
Eastbound and westbound buses use separate boarding locations on Water Street. Fares between St. Marys and Stratford start at approximately $6. For more information about Flixbus’s accessibility standards visit www.flixbus.com/service/passengers-with-reduced-mobility
St. Marys and Area Mobility Service
The St. Marys and Area Mobility Service provides accessible transportation for medical appointments, adult day programs, social excursions and local errands.
The service is available to seniors, individuals recovering from illness or injury, and people with varying abilities. Door-to-door transportation is available seven days a week, with booking hours Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
VIA Rail
VIA Rail provides daily passenger rail service to and from St. Marys, connecting the community with destinations along the Toronto-Sarnia corridor, including Stratford, Kitchener, Toronto and London.
Trains stop at the St. Marys Train Station, 5 James St. N., seven days a week. Passengers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online or by phone. A self-service computer is also available at the station for ticket purchases, with Town staff available during designated service desk hours to assist passengers.
Schedules, fares and booking information are available through VIA Rail.
“We recognize that the end of PC Connect service will have an impact on residents who have come to rely on it, particularly for travel to work, appointments and other essential destinations,” said Brent Kittmer, CAO. “At the same time, we’re encouraged to see other transportation providers continuing to serve St. Marys and, in some cases, expanding their services. We want residents to be aware of the options available to them and to be able to choose the service that best meets their needs.”
Residents are encouraged to check directly with transportation providers before travelling for the most up-to-date information on schedules, fares, availability and accessibility.
