Community Commons Campaign Builds Momentum Ahead of October Fundraiser

The vision for a vibrant new community gathering place in downtown St. Marys is moving forward, and residents are invited to help make it a reality. 

The Community Commons at 14 Church Street North will transform a historic downtown building into a welcoming, multi-generational hub where residents can connect, learn, create and access valuable programs and services. Planned spaces will support programming for the St. Marys Public Library, EarlyON, the Friendship Centre and Museum, provide a collaboration space for community organizations and social service agencies, and create flexible gathering areas for residents of all ages. 

While significant planning and community consultation have taken place to shape the project, fundraising efforts are now underway to help bring the vision to life. Community donations and grants will play an important role in the future redevelopment of the property. A fundraising goal of $1 million has been established to support the project 

"This project is about creating space for people to come together," said Sarah Andrews, CEO of St. Marys Public Library. "The Community Commons will help meet growing community needs while preserving an important downtown landmark for future generations." 

To help build excitement and raise funds, the Community Commons Capital Campaign Committee is hosting a Community Concert and Family Fun Event on Saturday, October 3 at the Pyramid Recreation Centre. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds supporting the Community Commons project. The fun-filled family event will feature live music from beloved children's performers Sonshine & Broccoli, along with opportunities for families to gather, connect and celebrate community. Residents are encouraged to bring the whole family for an afternoon of singing, dancing and community spirit while supporting the future of the Community Commons. 

The Town purchased 14 Church Street North in 2022 with a vision to create a campus of services and programs in the downtown core. Through a public-led planning process, the Community Commons concept was developed to address growing needs for programming and community space while supporting the Town's long-term growth plans.  

Residents can support the project by attending the October 3 fundraiser, making a donation, or learning more about the vision for the Community Commons at 14 Church Street North.
