Summer Program 2020

How it works:

Each year, the program offers two components, the in Library sessions and the reading tracking component. This year however, due to the COVID-19 measures in place, our Summer Program will be delivered entirely through virtual programming hosted on our Facebook page and through Zoom. This summer, we will also have "Fun @ Home" kits available for pickup that will correspond with the online programs offerings.

The second component is the reading tracking component- more details in the table below. The reading tracking gives children an incentive to continue reading over the summer so they are able to maintain the literacy skills they worked so hard on throughout the school year.

Registration:

This year, registration will be specific to each virtual events. Events hosted on our Facebook page will not require registration, however, some Zoom programs may require pre-registration to hold your spot. Watch our Facebook page for more information.

Fun @ Home Kits

We are happy to announce that we will have weekly kits available for summer program participants to take home and enjoy.

Kits fall into two age groups and correspond with online programming to take place throughout the week. Each kit includes a craft activity and a STEAM activity and the option of books. Please read the info sheet inside the kit for more information.

Jr kits are geared toward kids 6 and under and Sr. kits are geared toward 7+. Check out our video on Facebook (posted on Fridays at 9:00am) to learn what's inside the kit you will be receiving.

The DEADLINE to reserve a kit is Wednesday night.

Please pick up your kit on Saturdays between 1-5pm or Tuesdays between 4-8pm. Kits can be picked up at the Queen St. entrance (between the Town Hall and Tim Hortons). Please ring the doorbell when you arrive and a staff member will be there to greet you and give you your kit and items you may be picking up.

Virtual Program Offerings

Each week, a variety of programs will take place virtually (as seen in the weekly calendar below). When you register to pick up a kit, you will be registered for the corresponding Zoom programs and sent a link to join the program.

For example, when you register for a JR kit, you are required to leave your email address and that is where you will receive the Zoom invitation to join the JR Magic Carpet program.

Other virtual programs include Trivia and the STEAM and Craft tutorials which will take place directly on our Facebook page at the times stated below.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Library at 519-284-3346 and ask for Rebecca or email summerreading@stmaryspubliclibrary.ca

 Reading Tracking

This year, the Library is providing reading log sheets to participants. One sheet is for school age and the other for pre-reader age. These sheets allow children to track their reading by colouring in shapes. Pick them up during open hours from the Library and start reading! This year, the grand prizes winners will be drawn from a pool of all participants in the program. Pick up your tracking sheet from the Library or print them at home from the pdf links below.

Pre-reader log
• The pre-reader log has 20 fun shapes on it. Each time a child reads for 15 minutes, they should colour in one shape. After all 20 shapes are coloured, the child will have read for 300 minutes (5 hours) and is eligible for a prize!
•Return your sheet to a Library staff member during open hours to collect your prize!
•There is no limit on the number of logs a child can fill out as long as they are continuing to fill it out using the minutes guideline.
•Print the pre-reader log sheet

School-age log
•The school age log has three shelves with 20 books on each shelf.
•Each time a child reads for 30 minutes, they should colour in one book spine. After they have coloured in all 20 books on one shelf (10 hours), they are eligible for a prize!
•Return your sheet to a Library staff member to show us your completely coloured in shelf and collect your prize.
•There is no limit on the number of logs a child can fill out as long as they are continuing to fill it out using the minutes guideline.
•Print the school age log sheet
