Walking is the best fitness exercise ever invented and is more than just an enjoyable mode of transportation. It can also improve your fitness, health and mental well-being. St. Marys Recreation Department, in partnership with St. Marys D.C.V.I., offers a walking program, which makes walking indoors easier than you think!
Some benefits of walking include:
Walking refreshes the mind, reducing fatigue and increasing energy
Regular brisk walking can reduce elevated blood fats or blood pressure and improve digestion and elimination
Walking strengthens bones and helps prevent or control osteoporosis (a condition where bones get brittle and fragile)
Walking relieves stress and tension
Brisk walking is an aerobic activity. It increases the body’s demand for oxygen and trains your heart, lungs and muscles to work more efficiently.
This program is free and self-directed so the only requirement is that you register with the Recreation Office. You will be given a card for identification, a map of the school indicating distances and an information sheet giving you times that the service is available.
Times for walking at D.C.V.I are: Monday-Friday 7:00am- 8:30 am and 4:00pm- 7:30 pm. After 7:30, the school entrances will be locked from the outside for security reasons. However, you will still be able to continue walking until 10:30pm, at which time the school will be locked if no one is using the facility. If you would like to walk indoors during the hours of 8:30am-5:00pm, please call the Friendship Centre at 284-3272 to see if the multipurpose room is available for walking. This is also a free program offered by the Friendship Centre.
Already a member? If one year has passed and you still wish to remain using the program, please call to let us know you are still using the program.
