St. Marys Minor Hockey

The St. Marys Minor Hockey Association provides minor hockey for more than 450 players aged 4-19 years. The SMMHA strives to provide a program that meets the needs for all its players, whatever their age or skill level. Boys and girls play in house leagues, Lambton Middlesex Local League, Shamrock Hockey League and the Western Ontario Girls Hockey League. Our representative teams compete for provincial championships within the Ontario Womens Hockey Association and the Ontario Minor Hockey Association. SMMHA is also proud to offer a recreational league for players under 20 years old.

Tryouts for rep teams (Girls C and Boys BB & AE) are held in early September. Early September also features Skills Clinics for Mite, Tyke, Novice and Atom house & local leaguers. Our boys and girls Local League teams take to the ice in mid-September closely followed by the Mite and Tyke House Leagues. In 2008-09 SMMHA introduced weekly goalie clinics.

Each league wraps up its regular season at a different time. Boys BB & AE teams begin the provincial championship race in mid-January. The girls C teams start their provincial hunt at the end of the month. By mid-February all of our teams, except Mite & Tyke, are involved in either league or provincial playdowns. Most teams have wrapped up their season by the end of March. Notable exceptions are the girls C teams who qualify for the Provincial Championship Tournament in mid-April and the Tyke and Novice teams who host a final fun tournament at the beginning of April.

The backbone of the SMMHA is the many volunteers who organize, coach and raise funds. The success of fundraisers such as the 6 major tournaments, Mite, Tyke and Novice Fundays, the Booster Weekend Showcase, Wing Night, the Men’s & Women’s No Body Contact Tournament and our August Golf Tournament enable the SMMHA to keep registration fees at an affordable level. Local businesses and organizations support minor hockey through team sponsorships and donations at Booster Weekend and we appreciate their contributions to the youth of the St. Marys community.

For more than 50 years the SMMHA has developed thousands of hockey players, some of whom have gone on to play junior, college and professional hockey. Whether they make hockey a career or a recreational pastime, minor hockey has been and will continue to be an important part of the lives of the people in St. Marys and area. We know our players learn life skills that they will take with them the rest of their lives. We are proud to provide our kids the opportunity to experience FUN in the game of hockey.
